What are today's goals?

  • Study for MTA Certification and pass the Exam
  • Discuss the different kinds of operating systems
  • Discover the utility programs included in system software and what do they do
  • Finish up work from the last few days

1) Continue with Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Certification for 98-349 WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM FUNDAMENTALS

  • Only a few more days to take the Certification Exam

2) All About Operating Systems

Your computer's operating system (OS) manages all of the software and hardware on the computer. Most of the time, there are several different computer programs running at the same time, and they all need to access your computer's central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage. The operating system coordinates all of this to make sure each program gets what it needs.

In your notebook:

  • In your notebook, describe the three most common operating systems for personal computers which are Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • Describe Command Line vs. GUI

3) All About Utility Programs

Utility programs perform specific tasks related to the management of computer functions, resources, or files. For example:

  • File Manager - Displays list of files, organizes files in folders, copies & renames & sorts & moves files and folders
  • Uninstaller - It removes a program, as well as any associated entries in the system files
  • Search Utility - A program that attempts to locate a file on your computer based on the criteria you specify
  • Image Viewer - Allows users to display, copy and print the contents of graphic files
  • Disk Cleanup - Searches and removes unnecessary files such as: downloaded program files, temporary internet files, deleted files, unused program files
  •  Disk Defragmenter - Reorganizes the files and unused space on a computers hard disk so that the operating system accesses data more quickly and programs run faster
  • Backup Utility - Provides an easy way to take backup. Some operating systems also provide this facility. A backup utility copies, or backs up, selected files or an entire hard drive onto a backup drive
  • Antivirus - Antivirus programs enclose information about different identified viruses. They can identify viruses and also get rid of them.

Note: There will be a notebook quiz on this last day of cycle, so take good notes on the boot process. We will go over everything together before the quiz.
